| 17 - Inductance Analysis of an IPM Motor<DP> |
Overview

Closeup |
IPM motors enable the use of reluctance torque as well as the magnetic
alignment torque. They are increasingly used in applications such as air
conditioners and automobiles.
To improve controllability of the IPM motor, an accurate evaluation of
the inductance is indispensable.
JMAG can calculate the d/q-axis inductances of the IPM motor including
the effects of magnetic saturation and leakage flux.
This example presents the use of a magnetic field analysis to obtain the
effects of the current phase angle on the inductance of an IPM motor. |
Inductance
The inductances are shown in Fig. 1 and the torque that is calculated from
the inductance is shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 shows that the d-axis inductance is smaller because the flux must
pass through the low permeability magnet. It is less affected by magnetic
saturation due to very large reluctance of the magnet plus air gap. On
the contrary, the q-axis is significantly affected by magnetic saturation
because the q-axis reluctance is much smaller since much smaller portion
of the flux path is low permeability material. Fig. 2 shows that the maximum
torque for this IPM motor can be obtained when the current phase angle
is around 20 degrees. |
