I would like to talk about our challenges at JMAG. Our dream is to bring innovation to electrical machine design through the strength of simulation.
Due to high accuracy simulations in high speed as well as ease of operation, simulations are increasingly playing an active role in electrical machine design. We believe that this can bring new perspectives to the field.
For this purpose, we have continuously strived for enhancement of the parallel solver functions as well as higher processing speeds for everything from model creation to results evaluations. We have also contributed to the progress of material modeling and physical modeling for improved accuracy, and the development of a direct modeling function in order to expand the use of parametric analysis is underway. Lastly, JMAG now is taking greater steps towards Model Based Development (MBD). I want to report to all of you the challenges and direction of development of JMAG.

While it is safe to say that the certainty of vehicle electrification has never been so apparent, the debate on the appropriate level of electrification and appropriate system to get there is still ongoing and it’s likely to stay that way for the conceivable future. The customers are becoming more familiar and captivated with HEVs while their needs and desires in this space are evolving, hence driving the demand for a wider range of electrified vehicles including; BEVs (Chevy Spark), EREV (Chevy Volt 2), PHEV (Cadillac CT6), Fuel Cell etc. This talk focuses on electric machines for traction application, common key enabler of vehicle electrification. Specifically, we will discuss a range of electric machines designed and developed over the last decade in support of vehicle electrification at General Motors.
Although each application brings along its unique set of system and component level requirements and challenges, some characteristics and requirements are common across the entire portfolio. Specifically, for electric traction machines, some key common requirements are: Relatively high torque and power density, wide speed operating range, high efficiency in low to medium torque ranges over the large speed span, wide temperature operating range, high transient thermal capacity, reliability, excellent NVH metrics, mass manufacturability and ultimately, the cost. All combined constitute a tall engineering order by any measure and no single electric machine topology can meet it all across the application spectrum. At GM, over the years, we have designed and developed various electric machines, optimized for specific application needs and those will be the focal point of this discussion.

Model-Based Design is a proven method of using system-level simulation to develop embedded software for motor control systems. The approach is improved with the use of higher fidelity FEA-based motor models. In this presentation, MathWorks will describe Model-Based Design, with emphasis on motor modeling and the joint efforts between JMAG and MathWorks to improve importing motor model data from JMAG FEA software into Simulink.

With more and more attentions paid to environmental problems, we are pushing forward the development of products using solenoid valves such as a high pressure fuel pump and an injector of automotive direct-injection system, and thus it has become very important to predict the solenoid valve motions before trial manufacturing.
In this study, we proposed an analysis technique, which can predict solenoid valve motions based on a two-way coupled analysis of magnetic field and fluid, and applied it in new product development.

We began developing JMAG-RT and capability to link with control/circuit simulations over 10 years ago. We have been developing these capabilities supporting various types of needs over the years, and now we will take a next step to model based desin.
In this session, we’ll review the technical issues from the perspective of model based design and our approaches for them.

Recent traction motors are operated with the traction inverter to ensure the high efficient drive and variable drive speed. In such the application, electromagnetic harmonics noise by the carrier frequency from traction inverters occur the sound noise which are radiated from the motor surface. In the conventional method to reduce the noise by the carrier frequency, sometimes the career frequency distribution has been used to reduce the electromagnetic noise. Since the relationship between structural characteristics and electromagnetic noise are not clear, the noise reduction is limited by the career frequency distribution. To make it clear the relationship between the mechanical motor characteristics and career frequency characteristics, this presentation reports the results and consideration based on the investigation for the relationship between the electromagnetic-force modes in career frequency and the natural vibration modes.

Today, automobiles are equipped with an enormous number of ECUs to manage expanded functionality and advanced controls in the vehicle. In a hybrid vehicle, the motor ECU plays an even more complicated role as it manages the interaction between the conventional engine and the electric motor, along with its power systems.
We can test an ECU with a real motor but the amount of time and cost to create a motor based on the design is high. This is where motor simulation with HIL comes in, by accurately simulating a motor with the combination of JMAG and HIL instantly, reducing the cost and saving time on test.

We decided to investigate two types of electrical machines for Hybrid Electric vehicle (HEV) applications, i.e. induction machine (IM) and permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machine (PMA-SynRM) due to the sharp fluctuation of permanent magnet.
This paper makes a quantitative comparison between IM and PMA-SynRM for (HEV) application, in terms of electromagnetic and mechanical performance. The design process of IM is introduced, and for PMA-SynRM, a novel hybrid-PM assisted SynRM is proposed, which utilizes both ferrite and NdFeB PMs. The torque capability, torque/power-speed characteristics, torque ripple and efficiency map, are compared and discussed.

Enables virtual system integration and analysis on mixed-level multi-domain verification.
Supports capture and re-use of design expertise and process know-how.
Reliability stress data and system loop stability verification can be captured in models with automatic extraction flow.

Noise and vibration from electric machines including motors, generators, transformers and more, becomes increasingly important. The further push towards making electric machines more performant, the trend towards increasing power density of motors and generators, makes that noise and vibration is a critical topic for engineers to address, complemented with the higher expectations of consumers related to better acoustics.
Simcenter 3D is a new generation simulation software from SIEMENS PLM Software addressing a wide range of disciplines including Structural Dynamics, Acoustics, Multibody simulation, Flow, Thermal and more. Simcenter 3D offers best-in-class geometry and finite element (FE) modeling capabilities. Simcenter 3D helps you effectively build the simulation model you need from your 3D geometry. It includes unrivaled geometry manipulation tools that can handle CAD data from any source, as well as dedicated meshing and modeling for multiple applications.
To study vibrations and noise of electric machines, SIEMENS PLM software partners with JMAG. Essentially in a multi-physics context, a JMAG analysis provides the excitations resulting from electro-magnetic physics. These forces can be directly imported into the new Simcenter 3D environment, driving NX Nastran, providing full dynamics outputs and vibro-acoustic analyses capabilities in Simcenter 3D.
The presentation will focus on the new process coupling Simcenter 3D with JMAG, including a representative example.

Cogging torque reduction is essential for the improvement of positioning accuracy and the reduction of noise and vibration in permanent magnet servo motors for industrial and automotive use.
Careful design of the geometry of permanent magnets and stator cores can reduce cogging torque reasonably, however, various manufacturing errors can increase the cogging torque and cause a problem in servo drives.
In this study, several types of manufacturing error in rotor geometry were examined to reduce cogging torque to an acceptable level using JMAG and the optimization software modeFRONTIER.

High-speed rail has a small environmental impact, it has been international attention. Also it has been strongly desired to realize energy saving and comfortable train in space.
The transformer for the train, therefore, energy-saving, compact, low noise has been requested. High-frequency characteristics, thermal performance and noise characteristics is a contradictory characteristics, there is a need to achieve both.
Traditionally, we’ve been doing a product of development by repeating many of the prototype evaluation. ICHIKAWA , in order to achieve a more efficient development, design by JMAG, has been promoting the CAE of the prototype and test. In particular, has been studying the practical design method of simulation of the noise characteristics are difficult to design with design formulas.
This time, for noise reduction due to the difference of the core material and the gap structure, we report a comprehensive assessment which takes into account the cost on the basis of the JMAG simulation results.
In the future, in order to achieve a complete prototype-less, we will proceed with know-how accumulation and elaboration of digital design.

It is necessary to consider a number of constraints and tradeoffs in a limited period in electric machine design. As a method of considering a tradeoff, it is common to use a multi-objective optimization calculation. Since the optimization calculation is required to run hundreds to thousands of times the simulation, it may not be calculated within a limited period.
In this talk, a case study that the multi-objective optimization calculation time was shorten using the distributed processing functions of JMAG-Designer will be presented.

Transformers have complex structures in which coils share magnetic paths; the transformer coupling rate and losses are heavily dependent on materials and geometry. This makes it difficult to accurately evaluate transformer properties during the stages prior to a trial production. Actual development is usually conducted by performing a trial production relying on the rule of thumb to determine the structure.
However, in the simulation, it is harder for simplified models to achieve sufficient accuracy in higher frequency, which often results in the necessity of a trial production to perform satisfactory design verification.
During this seminar, modeling effects will be verified through the comparison between a magnetic analysis performed on a transformer and measured values.

In the design of automotive parts, both part quality and affordability are very important; and it is difficult and time consuming to fulfill these contradictory aims. Accordingly, we incorporated quality engineering in our product design to evaluate characteristics and variations; however, we had to repeat experimental designs many times and reworked them often. I would now like to introduce examples of how it has become possible to smoothly implement quality engineering designs using optimization algorithms from modeFRONTIER and magnetic field analysis from JMAG.

In high-frequency transformers/reactors, the skin effects/proximity effects in the windings are to be more significant. This requires that local physical amounts such as losses must be captured accurately, but it tends to increase the size of the model greatly.
In this seminar, we will discuss how to solve the typical problems on high-frequency transfoermes/reactors effectively using JMAG.
We will focus on the wire geometry modeling, the material modeling, acceleration of solver speed, loss analyses, and thermal analyses.

With the assistance of enhanced capabilities of computers and other contributing factors, FEM analysis has been extensively used for handling a broad range of objects from the understanding of physical phenomena in such as structures, fluids and magnetic fields to solving coupled problems of these phenomena. In addition, the application range has been expanding. For instance, the use of FEM analysis allows us to elicit the ultimate capabilities of things in combination with optimization methods and other means. In this lecture, the future potential of FEM analysis is discussed and the development of products for which FEM analyses have been used by the presenter so far is introduced by showing case examples and others.

Currently, there is case where a flat shape is required for a motor in order to improve the added value of the system incorporating a motor. In this case, an axial gap motor has attracted attention. The axial gap motor of the flat shape can generate high torque because it is possible to increase the surface area of permanent magnet in the flat shape. It is important to achieve high efficiency in order to take advantage of the axial gap motor having such advantage. Therefore, it is explained with actual development cases that the aspect ratio of the axial gap motor has an impact on N-T characteristic and efficiency. Moreover, the method reducing the losses that occur in the axial gap motor is introduced with actual development cases to attain high torque and high output.

In this presentation, we plan to introduce the results of comparison and evaluation through a 2D / 3D magnetic field analysis on the impedance results of a large synchronous motor using the Dalton-Cameron method.

A concept of many power electronics for the electric machine is explained. As an example, a MATRIX motor which has many inverters in the machine is introduced. Some results such as expanding high efficiency area by the winding change over technique, the iron loss reduction by controlling the instantaneous tooth flux, and the high torque generation due to the instantaneous gap flux density control are explained.

1. Evaluating an increase in accuracy for an analysis model
To confirm the effectiveness of JMAG analysis for power converters, we compared the measured values of actual products and analysis results of JMAG. The results showed a difference in values compared to the physical measurements and an enormous increase in analysis time. Thus, to increase the analysis accuracy, we determined the optimum model geometry and the parameter setting values. We also found out what caused the increased analysis times and methods to handle this issue. We will discuss these points in this presentation.
2. Determining the optimum model
To determine the outer geometry of a new power converter, a parametric study will be performed in a JMAG analysis. We will show the geometry we determined to be necessary for this analysis.

Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc (JAMA) is performing development works of leading-edge CAE technologies looking ahead ten years by utilizing K-computer for large scale models that can’t be computed with current computers in automobile manufacturers. In this presentation, outlines of the JAMA activities and current status of development on accelerating computational speed and upsizing computational model.

Needs of condition based maintenance (CBM) have been increasing in preventive maintenance service. CBM is a service for implementing the inspection and maintenance before the failure occurs.
CBM is a technique to detect a sign for the state of equipment with continuously monitoring, to inspect and maintain them before occurring serious trouble.
In this presentation, result of the investigation for equipment controlled by electromagnet is reported.
The feature of this method is as follows.
(a)Judge the sign from the change of coil current and terminal voltage.
(b)Monitor a state without adding any sensing device.

During the design process of electrical machines for traction applications a consideration of three dimensional electromagnetic effects is necessary to receive accurate results.
In conventional design methods a two dimensional finite element analysis with an additional approximation of three dimensional effects is widely used for design evaluation. For complex geometries and under the aspect of occurring stray fields within the machine, this workflow leads to accuracy reduction. More accurate is a three dimensional design evaluation using finite element analysis. Especially for the loss evaluation the calculation time significantly increase due to the magneto transient extension of the solved Maxwell equation.
One way of reducing the calculation time without decreasing the accuracy of the results is the usage of parallelization algorithms for single calculations on high performance multicore systems.
For the developed design process the massively parallel processing functionality of JMAG on high performance computing systems with multiple cores is used for analyzing different three dimensional effects on the losses of the machine.

We had investigated the breakdowns in Tape Lapped Joints for power cables.
We thought that the several gaps generated accidentally and continuously in the overlap of the insulating tapes and became the big gap. And we assumed that the electric field leading to breakdown generated in this gap.
Therefore we used JMAG for electric field analysis.
As a result of the analysis, we were able to confirm that the electric field which generated in the gap did not lead to breakdown.

High speed transportation is one of the most promising areas of research that regains lots of attention in recent years mainly due to development of high energy permanent magnets, high speed/high current power electronic switches and advanced control techniques.
Electromagnetic propulsion system design is a challenging area where significant amount of calculations and analysis are normally required before an optimum design can be achieved. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is one of the most accurate calculating techniques that is getting widely used thanks to ever growing computing capacity.
JMAG is one of the most reputable software packages that is being used to solve electromagnetic problems.
In this work, application of JMAG in design and development of fifth mode of transportation, aka Hyperloop is discussed. A comparison between performance of JMAG and another commercially available software package is also presented in this work.

To get a knowledge of the leakage inductance is necessary for understanding the transformer behavior. By using circuit simulation, we confirmed the validity of self inductance and mutual inductance defined by JMAG.

When users try to evaluate a large inverter driven motor, large current sensors are essential. This seminar introduces points of power consumption measurement of those devices. Particularly, basic contents such as countermeasure against noise and calculation method of measurement accuracy of the total are included.

The torque generated in automotive drives has to satisfy strong requirements regarding dynamic behaviour and accuracy. The state-of-the-art solution to realise the requirements is to implement a field-oriented-control (FOC). But this control needs to have accurate information about the current position and / or the current speed of the rotor. To acquire these information rotor-position-sensors are used that have an electro-magnetic-working principle. Usually these sensor are located close to the winding heads of the stator- and rotor-windings due to limited space for installation. Distortion of the sensor-signals can occur due to the electro-magnetic stray-field of the winding heads and the accuracy of the control gets worse. To avoid these problems and to implement the suitable sensor it is important to know exactly the spatial and temporal distribution of the electromagnetic field within the end-space.
These effects are investigated closely using different kind of approaches. The first one is the analytical calculation using the Biot-Savarts law. The second approach is the full 3D-FEM-Simulation using JMAG. Finally the calculation- und simulation-results are compared to 3D-measurements of the flux-densities inside an induction machine operated in different load-points.

Lucas-TVS is an Auto-component manufacturer and its products include Automotive alternators, Starter motors, Wiper motors, Ignition coils, etc., Some of its new products under development are Integral starter generator (ISG) for passenger cars, Traction motor for Electric Two wheelers. In present scenario where product technologies are changing faster than ever, R&D managers are constantly looking for new methods to shorten product development cycle time. Advanced computer aided design and simulation helps to achieve this to greater extent. Simulation based design validation reduces the time to make multiple prototypes and validate it. Most of the design iterations are performed in simulation and prototypes are made for optimum design. This presentation talks about how Lucas-TVS is able to reduce development time by performing computer aided simulations and addressing key challenges.
Two case studies are discussed. First one about automotive alternator, key challenges in modelling its electromagnetics, performance simulation using transient 3D approach, reduction of simulation time by using axial reverse boundary condition. Second case study is about PMSM for electric vehicle application, achieving wide operating conditions of torque and speed by flux weakening approach, inductance variation (Ld, Lq) and optimisation of rotor geometry to reduce torque ripple. Presentation covers the modelling efforts for design validation, design optimisation using parametric modelling and also correlation of the model results with test results.

In recent years, the application of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technologies to a wide range of vehicles, from small to large vehicles and sedans to SUVs.
And finally,Honda developed super sports car powertrain employed in the new NSX.
A motors for SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD for New NSX has been developed that combines the goals of greater compactness, increased output, reduced loss and a quiet drive.
This motor is an interior permanent magnet AC synchronous motor (hereinafter “IPM motor”) combining an interior permanent magnet rotor and a stator with concentrated winding. In addition,development of the motor focused on the slot combination, the shape of the magnetic circuits,seeking to reduce motor noise and vibration.

Many discussions take place in various locations and situations during the Users Conference. We predict that we will hear spectacular ideas and constructive criticisms for JSOL.
We hope to share these ideas and criticisms with the participants and open them up for discussion to push JMAG even further. We look forward to seeing you there.
