For an ever-increasing efficiency in narrowing down the design space, in JMAG, we are working not only on the development of optimization engines but also on the development of technology to prevent shape failures that occur due to an increase in design variables, and the improvement of the performance of simultaneous execution of many calculations cases.
In addition, as devices become smaller and more efficient, it is becoming increasingly important to consider simultaneously magnetic design, thermal design, mechanical design, insulation evaluation, and control design.
Therefore, we would like to introduce you to the new JMAG-Express, which allows you to seamlessly perform multifaceted evaluations.

The simulations that form the basis of these systems require both; accuracy so that they can be equivalent to physical prototypes, and speed to allow for wide-design space searches.
In addition to improving the speed of small-scale analyzes that are currently used for wide-design space searches, we have also improved the speed of the solver to perform large-scale calculations necessary to ensure accuracy. Therefore, although the performance of motors has been improved along with the remarkable development of material, analysis, and manufacturing technology, electrical motors having more and more higher performance are required. Therefore, this presentation introduces the technology and trends for achieving high efficiency and high power density in electrical motors used in traction and aircraft applications.

Hyperloop technology uses electromagnetic propulsion system to propel vehicle travelling through tubes which contain steel tracks. The electromagnetic characteristics of the track have a significant impact on the performance of the system. Methods to analyze specific features of the track are presented.

In large transformers, large currents flow through the windings, so stray load losses in structures such as tanks and frames may cause localized heating. To improve product quality, predicting high accuracy losses are required.
In this presentation, we will introduce an example of applying 3D magnetic field analysis to a large power transformer. The following will be described: the difference between frequency analysis and transient analysis, computational time with parallel computing.

For Vehicle traction motors, which require a wide range of speed-torque operating points, not only their efficiencies but also the temperatures at various locations need to be evaluated in detail during the design process to improve the continuous output rating. This require 3D magnetic field transient analysis to capture loss value at each location in the motor.
On the other hand, this analysis requires a certain level of computing performance to complete the calculation in a reasonable time because of the model size. At the same time, we may have an issue that running the analysis requires ingenuity, such as making adjustments between other analyses that similarly require the aforementioned computing capability.
Here, we focus on the possibility of utilizing the Cloud, which allows to purchase computing capability on an hourly basis, and evaluate its ability to flexibly respond to the requirement of ever-changing calculation scale/amount in the design process. We use Microsoft Azure as one of the Cloud computing services, perform the 3D magnetic field transient analysis, evaluate if the provided computing performance is sufficient for the calculation, and examine the possibility of improving the efficiency during the design process by utilizing the Cloud.

We introduce an application of thin wire of soft magnetic pure iron to the movable core for AC solenoid such as electromagnetic pump. Under an AC magnetic field, eddy currents are generated in the iron core, which reduces the responsiveness of the movable core. Therefore, in order to cut off the eddy currents, an iron core bundled with thin wires or pure iron was used as movable core. We introduce examples of optimization of wire diameter and analysis of responsiveness for the movable core using JMAG.

In response to these market demands, our company has developed an air-cooled high-density and high-output motor, which has been selected by NEDO for the research and development of a next-generation electric propulsion system, “Electric Motor Control System for Propulsion”, in their practical application project of advanced aircraft systems. Here we introduce an example of evaluation using optimization analysis by GA for the design of the motor part.

Finite element analysis needs to be performed repeatedly to design the optimal motor shape, and therefore, the computation time becomes longer. To solve this problem, “surrogate models” which accurately predict the motor characteristics using machine learning have been attracting attention, and it is possible to perform the design optimization without using finite element analysis. We proposed an automatic design system using a deep generative model to consider various magnet arrangements. This lecture explains the data generation using JMAG, the training method for the system, and the optimization results.

Controlling heat generation and cooling in motors is becoming more and more important as the power density of motors increases, especially for EV drives. However, it is difficult to model the heat transfer characteristics and cooling process of each part in a way that matches the actual situation even if an attempt is made to evaluate motor heat transfer by simulation. In order to run simulations according to actual conditions, it is important to create an analysis model that can account for the main heat transfer processes and apply well-founded empirical and literature values as heat transfer characteristics to the model in addition to measuring and applying the contact heat transfer characteristics of the actual equipment.
Therefore, we created a motor analysis model that resembles the actual situation using methods such as simplified thermo-fluid analysis (CFD) to devise an analysis model by applying our measurement technology to measure contact thermal resistance and temperature measurement between parts. By comparing the results of temperature measurement for the actual motor and the analysis using JMAG, we confirmed that the two results matched at a sufficiently expected level.
In this way, in addition to magnetic measurement of magnetic materials, we excel in approaches based on both “measurement technology,” in which the temperature and contact heat transfer characteristics of the actual motor are measured, and “analysis technology” in which simulation is run for motors. Applying these technologies to the motor design and development processes was not only effective in selecting materials and developing effective heat removal and cooling mechanisms but was also useful in the development of the actual motor, the subject of this study.

We introduce prediction method for electromagnetic force cause of motor noise by construct electro/magnetic circuit model and Co-simulate them. In addition, we present NV development process that connect electromagnetic force with mount vibration as vehicle pathway combining electromagnetic force and Nastran structure transfer model.
In this way, we can be realized that the many-sided functional allocation including current control, motor spec and full vehicle structure transfer system. By applying this process in the initial development phase, we can also construct the more flexible functional allocation.

In recent years, as motors have become smaller and lighter, suppression of vibration noise has become a major issue. However, the amount of calculation required for vibration prediction is large, and the current mainstream magnetic field-structure coupled analysis takes time, making effective design optimization difficult. Therefore, by limiting the motor vibration to one degree of freedom in the radial direction (1D), it is possible to easily understand the mechanism, and a high-speed simple method that can be used for multi-case calculations for design optimization is being studied. We have been promoting the efficiency of the development process using CAE in strengthening electrified vehicle development in the automobile business. In this presentation, we introduce our initiative in the evaluation methods utilized in the noise and vibration development for a motor in the drive-unit by linking Romax and JMAG-Designer. The methods consist of the evaluation of excitation force by resolving rotational and spatial orders in the magnetic excitation force, and the analysis of response contributions from the components of torque ripple, radial, and tangential directions, which are considered the main magnetic excitation force.

For in-line measuring machines/inspection machines, there are increasing demands in measurement using non-contact sensing. Design and adjustment of the measuring system focused on the sensing section is crucial for guaranteeing accuracy.
Traditionally, we have been adjusting/managing the position/orientation relative to the workpiece being measured using a contact-type probe, however, in the non-contact sensing, not only the aforementioned adjustment and management, but also the matching with the material of a workpiece to be measured based on the fundamentals of sensor become important.

These flexible devices require the endurance tests for bending, folding, twisting, etc. even in the specific environments such as low pressure, harmful gases, and underwater. In these tests, it is necessary to set the specimens in a closed chamber in accordance with the environment. This presentation introduces a development example using JMAG for the magnet unit that drives the specimens without contact.

An iron loss estimation method based on play model has been proposed for estimating iron loss under dc biased magnetization. Since the play model can estimate iron loss considering magnetic hysteresis, it is also useful for estimating losses due to minor loops that occur under inverter excitation. In order to estimate iron loss using the play model, a number of magnetic hysteresis loops need to be prepared. I will present a method for measuring magnetic hysteresis loops needed for the play model. I also report on the influence of measurement accuracy on the accuracy of the play model and the problems in the play model.

For the traction motor for vehicles, the high efficiency in low-torque region for city driving mode is required. The use of the wound field synchronous motor (WFSM) is expected to improve efficiency in the medium- and high-speed low-torque region for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), which has been conventionally used.
On the other hand, the designing method of WFSM is different from IPMSM, for example, the number of current parameters and the magnetic saliency.
In this presentation, we　calculated the torque performance and efficiency of WFSM as the traction motor for vehicles, and compared with IPMSM.

In this presentation, we introduce the effect of utilizing high-performance material (Permendur) in the motor for the electric motorcycle intended for the Isle of Man TT race as an analysis case study, where analysis using PSL was able to achieve both improved accuracy and speed.

The electrification of aircraft is playing a significant role on the path to reduce the aviation industry’s environmental footprint. The industry poses specific challenges for the development engineers due to the strict requirements and design boundary conditions. Developing an electrical drive train which meets the high safety standards, the desired efficiency and power to weight ratio requires a multidisciplinary design approach to cover all the requirements and design aspects. In an agile environment different engineering teams often use different platforms / ecosystems (e.g. MATLAB, Simcenter, JMAG) to deliver the results in time and face the challenge of real-time simulation and test data exchange between the disciplines. The aerospace industry set the highest standards to the engineer regarding the design process and for validation and verification of the design results. By increasing the confidence of the simulation result, the effort we must invest into the certification tests can be reduced. In Rolls-Royce Electrical, we were able to develop a process to simulate the power electronics effect on the electrical machine at the earliest phase of the design by connecting JMAG and MATLAB-Simulink. A prototype electrical machine was built and tested and the test results – focusing on the losses - were compared with the simulation results for model variation both in case of sinusoidal and PWM load.

It is an advantage of the solid salient-pole synchronous motor that the induction torque generated by the eddy current induced on the rotor pole can start the motor without inverters. Thus, this motor has been widely applied to the large-capacity industrial equipment driven by commercial power sources, such as compressors and pumps in oil & gas and steel plants. However, the induced eddy current is biased to the pole surface due to the skin effect, and consequently, joule loss is concentrated on the pole surface, which provokes the local heat. Since the starting time tends to be longer with increasing motor capacity, accurate estimation of the joule loss and temperature rise is a key point in developing this motor. This paper presents a case study applying the magnetic field-thermal coupling 3-D analysis to calculate the starting characteristics. Analysis results of the starting torque, current, and temperature rise were compared to those of the measurement to demonstrate the validity of the analysis.

The efficiency of induction motors are increased as output ratings are increased, in addition, it is also increased by poly-phase winding structure. In induction heating, it is extremely difficult to directly measure the stress/strain in a coil since an electric current is flowing through it. However, it has been predicted that stress/strain in a coil is related to the coil failure modes.
Causes for the coil failure modes are mainly two with 1) electromagnetic force and 2) thermal stress.
The stress/strain in a coil were predicted by performing respective electromagnetic-structural and electromagnetic-thermal (stress) coupling analyses which can all be completed in JMAG.

We have developed “ultra rapid carburizing process” as a proposal for a more environmentally friendly heat treatment method toward carbon neutrality in 2050. This technology requires induction heating technology to achieve high temperature treatment, carburizing atmosphere control technology, and cooling technology to reduce heat treatment strain. In the past, try-and-error was the main method used in the field, but the improved accuracy of CAE technology has enabled more efficient development.
For induction heating technology, JMAG is being fully utilized to design induction heating coils and study heat treatment conditions. The improvement of CAE technology and the construction of its environment have contributed greatly to the reduction of development lead time, including the linkage with thermal-fluid software and optimization software, and the use of the cloud, which was introduced last year.

In response to this issue, we would like to propose an analysis process that enables the vibration and noise reduction of the rotating machine by “improving the excitation force by optimizing the gear tooth surface by accounting for the error angle” and “applying the optimized geometry from the case derived in the non-parametric optimization” with a 1D model as a basis.
