Getting Started with Motor Thermal Design: Thermal Analysis Made Easy for Beginners Using JMAG-Express
The electrification wave is sweeping across not only the automotive industry but also various other industrial sectors, driving an ever-increasing demand for high-performance and high-efficiency motors. However, advanced motor design necessitates considering a wide array of factors, including magnetic and thermal characteristics, structural integrity, insulation performance, and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). This has traditionally demanded deep expertise, significant time investment, and substantial costs for repeated prototyping and evaluation from designers.
JMAG-Express, a design tool equipped with an intuitive interface specifically tailored for designers, poised to tackle these challenges. JMAG-Express empowers designers to simultaneously evaluate these complex elements, drastically cutting down rework in the early design stages, and ultimately contributing to shorter development cycles and reduced costs. In this paper, we’ll walk through a design example of an Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motor to demonstrate JMAG-Express’s ease of use and analytical capabilities. We’ll specifically focus on the motor’s efficiency map, thermal characteristics, and drive cycle operation, illustrating how JMAG-Express helps designers overcome hurdles and supports more efficient motor development.
