Design of a large tidal generator

Liam Naugher

Abstract

The oceans have great potential as a renewable energy source, one method of harvesting this energy is the use of tidal generators. Tidal generators are situated on the seabed and operate using the tidal currents. The presentation will look at optimisation of the PM generator within the OpenHydro tidal turbine. The existing design has been investigated using JMAG in order to reduce the mass of magnet material used. Initial JMAG results and future research direction, will be discussed. The presentation will finish with general comments on using JMAG.
