The Coupling of JMAG with Virtual.Lab Acoustics in view of predicting Transformer Noise due to Magnetostriction

Even though transformers do not necessarily produce high noise levels, they can be annoying for individual and communities mainly due to the tonality of the noise. From an environmental perspective it is important to reduce the noise generated by transformers.
This can be done by making sure the noise is contained within the transformer housing or at least by providing the right encapsulation of the transformer. In view of optimizing the transformer housing, it is of key importance to have high fidelity source models.
Magnetostriction represents one of the main components of transformer noise. In 2013, JSOL and LMS engaged into a partnership to extend the interface between JMAG and Virtual.Lab Acoustics to also include magnetostriction effects.
The focus of this collaboration is to be able to simulate noise from magnetostriction in a way that is fast, efficient and accurate. The techniques being developed is based on the projection of equivalent forces onto the structural modal basis of the transformer. These so-called generalized forces allows to reduce the amount of data substantially such that one can efficiently exchange data between JMAG and Virtual.Lab for acoustic radiation.
The presentation will show how such a process is implemented, including relevant examples.
