Simulation of a reduced size demonstrator of a direct drive PM wind generator used for loss measurement

概要

The axial flux machine is a machine type which presents from the construction point of view and from simulation point of view some special challenges. For example in order to reduce the losses in the stator armature of a PM Synchronous machine the lamination sheets need to be oriented in the circumferential direction, which is not easy to construct. Alternatively soft magnetic composite material can be used instead of laminated iron. The simulation is also challenging because the sliding surface method which allows a fast meshing between time steps cannot be used for the shape of the surface in the middle of the air gap which is a cross-section. In this talk, models of two different axial flux PM synchronous machines are presented. The first machine is a demonstrator machine which is planned to be built in our lab. The purpose of this machine is to validate the calculated losses in the rotor of large direct-drive Wind generators. The second machine is an in-wheel traction motor for automotive applications.
